Dr Tim Knowlson

CPsychol; AFBPsS

Tim is a registered and chartered Counselling Psychologist. He is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and an associate fellow of St Peter’s College, University of Oxford.

Tim started his journey in experimental psychology while studying his M.A. in psychology at the University of St Andrews, followed by successfully completing his doctorate in Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Psychology at the University of Surrey. His doctorate was embedded in the researcher-practitioner model and his thesis focused on restorative justice meetings between offenders and victims of crime in the United Kingdom.

From these experiences, Tim believes therapeutic contact is to empower insightfully driven meaningful change where possible and to promote acceptance of the things we cannot change. He is particularly interested in resilience and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Tim’s career has taken him from the National Health Service to working for over 12 years in the Higher Education sector, including at the University of Oxford and King’s College London. When he isn’t delivering sessions for Positive, he is working at the University of Oxford Student Welfare and Support Services as Peer Support Programme Service Lead, managing a small team delivering Peer Support Training and Supervision to the collegiate university, departments and divisions.

Tim is particularly passionate about university student mental health. He has successfully bid and project-managed a £60,000 fund from Office for Students and Research England, increasing access to Peer Support training for postgraduate research students and reaching hard to access students in STEM subjects to bolster postgraduate mental health. Tim has also won an IT Innovation Fund of a £25,000 budget, designing and project-managing a mobile website dedicated to reducing exam panic for Oxford students and delivering a successful project which has gone live and is being used by students.

Tim is a clinical supervisor, research supervisor and published author. He is also a consultant and named author on an active research project with King’s College London, exploring adolescent emotional regulation using an electronic animal called a 'Purrble'.
